Characteristics of the Graduate School of Science, Department of Material Science

Address of the Dean

Our goal is to cultivate students who challenge the advanced research of material science.

A large number of the properties that materials exhibit in are now utilized for a wide range of technological applications in various areas. In our graduate school, the academic staffs of mathematics, physics, and chemistry, collaborate with each other to better understand the origins of the interesting properties of materials and to find out novel high functional materials. In these studies, we are required to be familiar with basic ideas established in the past and have an ability to make use of various experimental techniques. Through the research activities and the education in our school, students will learn fundamental theoretical ideas of material science, advanced experimental techniques, and various methods of material synthesis and chemical analyses. We hope we will share our pleasure with you and that we can send our achievements of research to the world and to create a new frontier of material science.

Ideology for Education

material science

Our school consists of faculty members and curriculums based on the ideology for education of the School of Science. We provide only one course of material science and do not divide the course into the general areas of mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc. This is done in order to develop researchers and technologists hat are able to show their abilities in interdisciplinary fields. Jointly with the Department of Life Science, we make it possible to become highly trained professional, thus enabling graduates to work in a broad range of research fields. We also invite competent researchers from other research institutions, coordinating and cooperating chairs to enhance the education and research opportunities. We offer four main divisions, being different from old and traditional fields, to realize a higher-level of education and research concerning the understanding of physical property and chemical reactivity from the atomic and molecular structures of materials. The four divisions are as follows: Division of Condensed Matter Physics - Theory and Mathematical Science, Division of Condensed Matter Physics - Experiment, Division of Structure and Functional Material Science, and Division of Chemical Reactions and Molecular Design. Each faculty member belongs to one of the four divisions depending on his/her education and research field and maintains intimate cooperation with the others to bring his/her education and research activity to a higher and global level.
